Well, Canada has done it again. It seems as though, over the last several years, our neighbor to the North issues a new silver proof dollar as their first commemorative coin of the year! I must say the 2007 dollar, being that coin, is sure to be a hit with all numismtists in the world because of who it honors.

To see the coin and to learn about the native-Canadian whose likeness enhances the coin's reverse, click here: http://www.mint.ca/royalcanadianmintpublic/index.aspx?requestedPath=/en-CA/Home/default.htm

Clinker, that is a very nice silver $1 medal-coin.I don't like the gold on silver cameo version though. The Canadians sure love to commemorate their native tribes on coins.Things have come a long way since the 1958 Totem Pole silver $1.That was a genuine circulation coin.I haven't seen any banknotes depicting Native Canadian designs though.

All of my Canadian coins were purchased from coin dealers...even my 1935 (birthyear) Canadian dime, quarter and dollar...

The 1935 Canadian silver $1 is a very attractive (& a scarce coin too!) coin to have in a collection.I haven't managed to get any of the silver circulation commemorative issues yet,but I aim to have this as a goal.

The Voyageur is one of the most famous of all coin designs. It really does reflect Canada as a country with the 2 men in a canoe with the Northern Lights in the background.Emmanuel Hahn, who was born in Prussia,Germany, really proved himself to be right up there with the best coin designers in his day through this design.

No,I have not seen the Southern Lights here in New Zealand,as we can't see them here in Wellington, that is,when they occur.

Aiden...besides my collection of birthyear silver coins of the world, I collect Canadian Silver Dollars (no proofs), Mexican 8 Reales and Chinese Dollars and a few other coins that take my fancy, I like the Maui Trade Dollars, but since they're not silver, I probably won't collect them.

Skylark, that is a very nice native design.Do you know which Native Canadian nations produce those designs that inspired those on the back of that Canadian $20 note?

As to me going on holiday,I'm not likely to visit Canada, let alone Australia, any time soon.

Its all northwest coast "First Nations". the two sculptures are by Bill Reid who was Haida.
The Bear (gold circle) looks to be Haida as well, but am not sure about the man-riding-sea animal.
Probably says somewhere on the bankofcanada.ca site.

Skylark, that is very interesting. So is the Haida the ones that are the ones who build the famous totem poles like on the 1958 Totem Pole $1? I was chatting to a couple from Ontario who told me that both the Inuit & the Cree have their own alphabets that they created themselves.I can guess that there must have been a lot of Native Canadian code talkers serving during World War II to encrypt & decode messages through the use of the native alphabets.

We have around 78 Maori nations here in New Zealand. Some of them have a dialect that is so distinctive it should really be regarded as a language in its own right.I don't speak any of the Maori dialects at all, because I have felt never needing to learn any of them.I just stick to good old English.

Yep that $1 was Haida art.
Ha! we currently got 198 Nations, most with there own language(also as different as French to English) here in BC :p
Never heard of any being code talkers though.
