The Rand is the official currency of South Africa. Some other african countries also use the Rand. Rand's name derives from the word "Witwatersrand" which is an abbreviation of "White-waters-ridge". This is the mountain on which the city of Johannesburg was built. In the past it was a major deposit of gold extraction. In October 2012 the "South African Reserve Bank" announced the launch of the new notes Rand. It is a tribute to the greatest icon of the struggle for freedom in South Africa and was nicknamed RANDELA. The notes have the image of Nelson Mandela in front and behind were kept the "Big Five". Were also kept the colors and sizes for each value. The link has pictures of old and new banknotes RAND. http://www.numisbrazilis.blogspot.com.br/2013/06/rand-cedulas.html
