I picked up a (gilt?) bronze medal commemorating the Caen Memorial with a Tresors De France obverse. Apparently this is a French numismatic series by Arthus Bertrand? http://www.tourisme-et-medailles.fr.../Cadre-Tresors-de-France-Arthus-Bertrand.html I think my medal is "14 Caen Mémorial de Caen 39" on that page. Any idea how many were made, what the story is behind the series, or what it's worth?
I've been collecting French medals for a very long time, and I've never been able to find mintages for the majority of them. They just don't keep accurate records for them. Chris
I wonder why that is? Are mintages (& the rarity they often align with) less important among European collectors? I know that back in the early days of US collecting, mint marks were seen as an irrelevant detail by many collectors.
Not when it comes to coins. Guess that with historic medals it would be nice to know production figures as well. But with regard to such tourist souvenirs ... Maybe the Caen Memorial knows about the figures? This is a medals page in French; they also have an English version. Also, this page lists quite a few médailles touristiques made/issued by the Arthus Bertrand company. Select a year to view the pieces. Hope this helps, Christian
