I'll admit I haven't seen that many coins broken by way of shipping but thats probably the worst I've seen. Survived nearly 1800 years well-preserved and intact only to be horribly shattered like that...

It's terrible that a coin can last so long until it gets into the hands of the postman. This one arrived several years ago in the same condition. I got a refund since it's up to the shipper to properly prepare the package.

This thread will give me nightmares! Thankfully I've never had the Post Office break a coin, but PCGS did break a beautiful Commonwealth Halfgroat of mine about 10 years ago.

Ugh. Something very heavy fell on that package, or it wasn't properly padded. If it was mailed as a First Class Parcel, it comes with $50 insurance. I would take it to your postmaster and see if you can file a claim and at least recover some of the cost - they'll need to see your receipt for the purchase.

Oh, man... that's awful. An antoninianus at 1.9g would likely have been extremely crystallized and brittle. It would have needed extra care in packing.

Saul at Romanorum was very understanding and offered me a full refund or store credit. Real professional dealer.

The silver coin may have suffered from embrittlement, making it extremely fragile. I accidentally destroyed a Lysimachos Tetradrachm earlier this year. I still feel terrible about it. The surfaces were intact but the complete inside of the coin had been converted to a white powdery substance, which I now understand to be Silver Chloride. The tetradrachm almost crumbled in my fingers with only gentle pressure.

I didn't notice it was that light. That alone would keep me from buying it, wow, never saw an ant that light from that period.

What a shame. It was a nice coin. Must have gotten stuck under a heavier parcel or something like that. Fortunately this has never happened to me. But I did snap an LRB in half when I was cleaning it one time. I since have given up cleaning the crusty ones as it can take forever and sometimes you only get a coin that is in VG or F condition when all is said and done.

Sorry for your loss & I appreciate the post.

Nobody "likes" what happened to your coin but I'm sure that everyone "likes" that you posted the dynamic fragile coin example.:)

Good dealers deserve our patronage, I am going to go look at his wares right now.

It's to the dealer's credit that he issued you a refund.

Personally, I think it will turn out to be a good thing in the long run. Even though you wanted that particular coin, if it was so crystallized and brittle that it broke during transport, you're better off looking for a more robust example of that type.
