Does anyone here treasurehunt for circulating silver? do you go to the bank? get rolls of half dollars? quarters? have any tips? Today I decided to look through all the change jars around the house and although modest, finding a 1945 wheatpenny and a 1962 silver dime gets me excited :hail: this is a cool website: http://www.coinflation.com/silver_coin_values.html
There is a thread around here somewhere all about searching bankrolls. I myself do it sometimes, its a lot of fun, and when the water levels are down at the lakes during the summer I like to take my metal detector out there, I find all sorts of stuff from silver rings to old coinage.
I get rolls whenever I have a chance, but haven't done it in months. Previously, searching say $25 of cents will yield an average of 10 or so wheaties. No scarce dates yet, tho some people do better and find older pieces. Recently, I checked a roll of dimes at a client's cash register and found a silver dime! Second this year. Good luck.
I finally found a bank that would order bags of half dollars, so now I'm trying to come up with the extra cash to buy a bag, since sept. I've searched about 1,500.00 in halves with a 1,000.00 being fed rolls, I believe the feds try to get most of the silver before it's rolled, but a few get by, I've found 68 silver halves most being 40%, some in here say that you might have better luck searching bags of coins, or if you can find rolls of coins at banks that has been rolled by individuals and turned in. Christmas has already passed, but I here that from the banks that sometimes people are trying come up with extra christmas money and bring rolls in. I'm sure there are other ways, there are many more in Coin Chat that can give you the info you need John
what kind of bags? do you think it would be too forward to ask the tellers if they have any older looking rolls that didn't come straight off the presses? (particularly in the case of silver)? somone had mentioned passing the time at a laundrymat with the extra quarters from the machine... last time i was at a laundrymat they were mostly new though.
p91: Just ask the tellers for any rolls that customers may have turned in. That works, if they have nay. They are usually happy to get rid of them. But, you have to take the good with the bad.
I found a 1945 wheatie the other day as well in a random change search. MS GRADE, needless to say a small find but enjoyable becuase of the grade.
I used to search halves, but I discontinued the practice because (1) the number of silver finds went down significantly and (2) the banks around here don't like to handle halves and certainly don't seem to want to order more of the "worthless things" that nobody uses anymore.
