In the summer of 1934, as hard times were tightening their grip on Maryland, the newspapers were full of headlines about a good news story: an improbable stroke of luck that promised to lift two South Baltimore families out of poverty. It had to do with a mysterious cache of gold coins discovered by two scrappy kids in late August of that year.
The mystery casts such a spell that Leonard Augsburger felt its pull all the way in Chicago, where he is a coin collector. He researched every aspect of the 1934 find and wrote Treasure in the Cellar: A Tale of Gold in Depression-Era Baltimore. This morning we revisit a conversation we had with him around this time last year."
