Traveling with coins?

    A quick question...
Anyone had any troubles traveling or getting through airport screening with ancient coins?

I'm going on a business trip (within the US) and would like to bring some with me but also don't want any hassle. Usually I just leave them home... but it would be fun to have some with me to pass the time.

Any troubles, warnings or tips for someone wanting to go through airport screening with ancient coins? Thanks for the input!

    Josh

PS: When I say leave them home... they are not "at home" but at the bank... so... haha... you will not find them here if you swing by :)

I took my entire collection from the UK to the US. No problems. I kept mine in my carry on. Don't not check them! Someone will steal them. Don't bring anything you couldn't get over losing.

I have not run into trouble but I usually only have a few with me. Travel into and out of the US.

Carry them on the plane with you if you must travel with them. If TSA asks to examine them, request a private inspection so onlookers don't see what you have.

Thanks everyone. I was thinking it shouldn't be a problem... but sometimes you don't know what you don't know!

Plus I had this daydream of TSA detaining me in a small windowless interrogation room and not understanding that yes, there are ancient coins outside of museums and yes you can own them... haha...

Many years ago before TSA, I carried a very large bag of jewelry, watches, rings from a Houston to Reno. When the bag went thru the screening machine, the lady looked at me very quizzically. I whispered jewelry and she smiled. I guess all that metal looked lik a big blob to the machine!

Unless it's a necessity to bring I wouldn't travel with anything valuable. Just too many variables between thieves, damage, misplaced items.

I'm on various other hobby forums. Folks want to travel with 3 or more expensive watches or fountain pens on their vacation because they love using them. Then they have to use the safe in the hotel room. Things often go wrong though and it's usually not worth the heartache.
