Siberian Man has made threads for practically every country, but I didn't find these. And since we've been discussing the plastic coins of Transnistria in another thread, I thought I'd make a place to share coins of these two inextricably-bound countries.

    Transnistria, 1, 5, 10 KOPEEK in aluminum, 25 KOPEEK in aluminum-bronze, and 50 KOPEEK in brass-clad steel.

    Moldova, 1 BAN, 5, 10, 25, 50 BANI in aluminum, 50 BANI in brass-clad steel.

I like the National Arms for both of these countries - they're distinctive and interesting. I think the "nicest" coin of the bunch is the 2005 50 BANI - the addition of the grape clusters is an elegant artistic touch to what would be otherwise a very plain, utilitarian design. Post them if you've got them. :)

    chrsmat71 I LIKE TURTLES!

i had no idea there was a transnistria until these recent threads.

if i glance at the first coins, i would assume they were older coins from the soviet union.

And you wouldn't be far off the mark. The Transnistrian coat of arms is a revision of the former Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic emblem. It's interesting that they retained the iconic Soviet hammer and sickle.

I think I have a coin or 2 from there. I will check for them after lunch. :blackalien:

Well, Moldova is an independent country that is a member of the UN and various other international organizations. Transnistria does not have such a status. But it is interesting how most versions of the country (?) name reflect the Moldovan view only: Transnistria - on the other side of the Dniester/Nistru river. The coins say Pridnestrovia ...

Yes, quite right. I suppose we could call it a wannabe country.
