Trajan is one of my favorite emperors. When it comes to portrait coins, bigger is better. This coin minted at Antioch which is slightly larger in diameter than a denarius (and much thicker, so it is quite a bit heavier). 20 mm. 7.22 grams. Silver didrachm. Trajan, 98-117. Struck 100 as COS III (see the Gamma, Γ, at the end of the reverse legend?) AYTOKP KAIC NEP TRAIANOC Early style portrait. I have two Trajan provincials, one a 27 mm. tetradrachm from Tyre with Melqart on the reverse, and the other a 19 mm. drachm from Arabia Bostra (at least traditionally) with a camel reverse.
Thanks, @Valentinian ... I always really liked that size of Ancient coin in Silver: Shekel, Didrachm, Pre-Reform Heavy Denarius, Stater are all a great size in-hand. I will follow @DonnaML ’s lead: TRAIANUS Arabia Petraea, Bostra. Trajan. CE 98-117. AR drachm (18.57 mm, 2.92 g, 8 h). Struck CE 112. What an interesting coin with the bust on top of eagle. I have to believe that that sort of obverse motif is not common. Love it
Thanks. Most of the Trajan tetradrachms from Tyre that I've seen have an eagle on the obverse under Trajan's bust. Edited to add: there are 23 such coins for sale on VCoins. 16 have a small eagle on the obverse under Trajan's bust. The other 7 have a large eagle on the reverse.
