Gaius Messius Quintus Traianus Decius (c. 201 AD – June 251 AD), sometimes translated as Trajan Decius or Decius, was the emperor of the Roman Empire from 249 to 251. A distinguished politician during the reign of Philip the Arab, Decius was proclaimed emperor by his troops after putting down a rebellion in Moesia. In 249, he defeated and killed Philip near Verona and was recognized as emperor by the Senate afterwards. In the last year of his reign, Decius co-ruled with his son Herennius Etruscus, until they were both killed by the Goths in the Battle of Abritus. Here are a few from my collection. Please feel free to post your Trajan Decius coins. Cheers!
Very nice. I have only one, a very worn AR Antoninius with Pannoniae reverse. With a deep green patina
Trajan Decius also struck a whole series of "DIVO" coins honoring past emperors all the way back to Augustus. It's very interesting to see portraits of the earlier emperors re-engraved 100+ years later. Makes me wonder if the government had a stock - or "collection" if you will - of mint-state coins from the past. All photos are from CNG and none of them are my coins. Nice coins posted! This sestertius was acquired last year through eBay because of the scarcer reverse and nice green-blue patina. Trajan Decius, Sestertius, Rome, 249-251. AD GENIVS reverse. RIC IV 117 20.01 grams
