It is hard to tell from the pictures but it could have a recut Date! If so and the coin is real (not a counterfeit), it might add some premium to the value. Could you post pictures of both the full Obverse and Reverse and another picture of the Date that isn't so closeup, so that we can get a better perspective as to whether the Date is recut and might be able to determine if the coin authentic or a counterfeit? Frank
Justafarmer, welcome to the forum! Sorry to say, but I'd bet you dollars to donuts its a fake. Silver doesn't typically rust Last I heard there were something like 3 times as many fake trade dollars than were ever genuinely minted. Hopefully, I'm wrong.
lawdogct, The coin may in fact be a fake but how did you surmise that the coin has rust on it? I sure cannot identify any rust on the coin from the massive and distorted .ART file! Frank
Hmmm....the image I'm viewing is crytal clear so that may be a start point But I'm referring to the reddish rust colored vein of impurity the runs beneath the 1877 and on towards the left side of the image, just appart from the rim of the coin. Its possilbe its a planchet alloy mixing issue, but I doubt it.
Maybe it's the ISP or something else but the image that I viewed earlier was a massive and distorted .ART file! I saved the image to my "D" Drive on my PC in hopes of decreasing the size to get a better picture. However, it was too large for any of my programs to open. I see what you mean now! It looks like there is a couple of cracks that have dirt in them or could possibly bee rust. Frank
