Was just chatting in a different thread and wanted to post this question for more to see. I have several older NGC holdered coins that i would like reholdered, not grade reconsidered. What would/could potentially happen if they cracked out the old coin and noticed it is way overgraded? I have a few older Jefferson proofs graded as PF69CAM and have gotten foggy over the years. They don't look like they would grade the same anymore. Would NGC take it upon themselves to contact me and let me know if they think it is no longer graded right, or would they blindly reholdered it with the same grade no matter what?
If you ask for re-grading they will do so. If you select the "new holder only" service, that's what you will get - a new edgeview holder with the same grade. Although its possible, I doubt they would re-grade it if you did not ask for that service. I have submitted many coins for a new holder only without any issues. If it makes you feel better, call NGC - they are easy to get on the phone and have always been very helpful (to me anyway).
NGC is better on this in my experience than PCGS who will sometimes with scratched up but not damaged holders tell the submitter that the coin has to be regraded believe it or not. NGC will charge $10 per coin plus an $8 invoice fee. Be prepared for a wait as both can take up to three weeks, but at shows it gets done quickly.
So are you saying they will make you get it regraded and won't just reholder it sometimes? If so, I guess that means they don't stand behind their grades like they say they do.
I could give you a specific example. I had to hold PCGS' feet to the fire and let other collectors know. There was nothing wrong with the slab except scratched, the coin was OK. I spoke to a leading dealer who told me they can get away with not reholdering if they call the holder "damaged" and they alone make that judgment call.
Isn't that the whole reason for getting a coin reholdered, damaged slab? Or was PCGS claiming the "damage" compromised the coins grade, therefore they will not guarantee the grade? Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
You could have a water damaged coin which would be on you; in my case the holder was just scratched up, I don't know why. Dealers have been known to intentionally scratch certain holders to obscure problems on coins. The coin also had pvc which had been there since it was graded so maybe they wanted to wash their hands of it and not take responsibility. I ended up fully documenting it with auction records under their guarantee and they got the pvc off, etc. but it cost me another $50 including shipping.
If you send it in for reholdering they will just reholder it UNLESS it is noticeably overgraded. In that case they will reholder at the appropriate grade and reimburse you under the grade guarantee. They will not put a noticeably overgraded coin back into a holder at the same grade.
I have never heard of grading services "regrading" or flagging submissions of reholder coins that are intact holders unless the coin has turned in the holder. If it is copper or other coin where guarantees don't apply you are out of luck in any case.
