A little variation to an existing topic. Everyone has their own reason.. whether it's sentimental or valuable or you just like it for how it looks. Let's see your list (or pics if available) and maybe a brief explanation.
Very interesting quetsion.... Here's my #1 and #10: 1) Chain Cent. Do I need to explain? This was a coin I wanted since childhood, I was able to purchase earlier this year. ... 10) 1861-o half dollar. You might be asking yourself why this ugly, holed coin is in my top ten. The answer is simple -- it is one of the few things I have from my paternal grandfather. ]
After further review, I don't want this thread to be about my coins.... I'd rather hear about all of your favorite coins.
Wow !! That is a beautiful collection, Leadfoot ! Need to wipe my drool off the screen. Thanks for sharing and keep 'em coming everyone.
1905 - Barber qaurter 1917 type 1 SLQ 1864 IHC or 1904 Proof IHC 1906 1/2 Eagle 1834 CBH 1882 GSA CC Morgan 1828 1/2 cent 1914-D 1/4 Eagle 1856 Seated 1/2 Dime 1913 Type 1 Buffalo Nickle rzage:hatch::hammer:
In no particular order: my 1875 CC 20C, holed in VG, I've always loved the CC even though most of that is out of my price range, and getting this coin in a lot of holed coins was fantastic. a 1805 half cent VG, SOOOOOO much History there its all I can do to keep from carrying it with me a 1836 half cent XF, really love the design an 1835 bust half O-105 VF, bitten by the bust half bug and this is one of my first purchases holed 1852 large cent, from my father my 1916 d merc anacs AG3, not the best but it represents my first major buy as an adult hobbiest, until that point nothing I ever purchased was more than $20. My 1946 Iowa and 1934 Texas commemoratives, born in one grew up in the other, love both designs. a 1940 S Lincoln cent in MS sixty-wow, who knows could be a 70. A long time ago in Hawaii I came across them in a dealers bin, about 50 of them to be exact that came right out of a roll, I bought three or four of them because they were so beautiful. It represents the series I cut my teeth on in the most beautiful of reds. an 1878 CC morgan in VG/F that was payment to me as a child for doing some numismatic work for one of my Dad's clients. I'll never forget that experience.
Please post away, and please don't feel like your coins are any more or less impressive than anyone else's!!! I, for one, can appreciate a beat up Lincoln as much as a chain cent. Everything is relative, and it wasn't all that long ago that I never dreamed of owning some of the coins I'm fortuate enough to own today. :thumb: Sincerely, Mike
Ok, I'm home now and have access to my pics file. Hard to follow leadfoot with his museum quality pieces but here goes. Here are mine in no logical order. 1) 1787 Fugio - Love the history and being the first coin authorized by Congress. 2) 1856 Flying Eagle - My biggest coin to date and the cornerstone of my key date collection. 3) 1795 Flowing Hair Half - My first example of the FH type 4) 2 St. Gaudens (1908NM and 1924) - Will be my 2 daughter's HS grad present in about 15 years. 5) Can't miss this 1877 IHC
6) 1885 V Nickel - Rarely see one in VF and up. 7) 1893-S Dollar - King of the Morgans 8) 1916-D Mercury - Found one in decent shape 9) 1909-S VDB - My childhood dream was to own one. 10) Can't forget the 1889-CC Morgan
Wow, my list isn't going to be anywhere near as good as everone else's, but here we go; in no particular order: - 1909-S Lincoln 1c PCGS VF25 - 1931-S Lincoln 1c NGC MS64RB - 1909 VDB Lincoln 1c PCGS MS65RD - 1926 Oregon Commemorative 50c PCGS MS64 - 1936-S Texas Commemorative 50c NGC MS65 - 1914-D Gold Indian Head $2.50 NGC AU58 - 1917-D Type 1 Standing Liberty 25c PCGS AU50 - 1884-CC Morgan $1 NGC MS63 - 1888 Liberty 5c NGC PF63 - 2001-D Buffalo Commemorative $1 NGC MS69 Well, there it is. My top 10 coins I own. And I love every one of them!
This is very tough for me because my coins are hard to rank either by eye-appeal or by monetary value. I will post my top five coins whose price was basically unaffected by toning. 1. 1897 Indian Head Cent NGC PF66* RB CAMEO: This coin is the king of my collection without a doubt. Vivid shades of magenta, pink, and yellow envelop both sides of this beautiful coin. The reverse shows a very pretty swath of emerald green and the cameo effect on this coin is gorgeous. This coin has population of 1 with two finer, and neither of the higher graded coins even approach this coin in terms of eye appeal. In a nut shell, this coin is the most attractive 1897 cameo proof in existence (Images courtesy of Anaconda). 2. 1881-S Morgan Dollar NGC MS68: This coin has already been discussed at length on this forum. The obverse of this technical beauty is toned with a thin crescent of electric blue, magenta, and orange. The reverse displays the same color scheme over a much broader area. 3. 1936 Buffalo Nickel NGC PR67 Satin: A delicately rainbow toned satin proof with hints of lime green, royal blue, bright pink and lemon yellow at the rims of the obverse and more pronounced rainbow toning of the same colors on the reverse. Excellent strike and clean surfaces account for the grade of this extremely attractive coin. (Images courtesy of Heritage) 4. 1942-P Jefferson Nickel NGC PR66 CAMEO: Cameo proof coins from 1936-1942 are exceedingly rare for any denomination. There have only been 12 cameo proof silver war nickels graded by either service, and only four have been graded higher than the present example. In addition, this coin is the only cameo war nickel graded by NGC in PF66. The CAC sticker gives confirmation that the grade including the cameo designation are well deserved. 5. 1944-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar NGC MS66: A highly lustrous superb gem exhibits splashes of ocean blue and chesnut brown on both the obverse and reverse (Images courtesy of Heritage). Again, this is my top five with a price unaffected by toning.
