I don't really know that I took one, but it sounded good, eh? The "MONSTERS of the SEP-SEV World" is a quote from my little brother Steve in another thread. I finally found what to me is a nice Sep Sev from Emesa within my budget (under $50). So here it is in all it's splendor (thanks you Monsters for letting me have one). SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG CO II laureate head right, star below REVERSE: SAECVL FELICIT dot, seven stars & crescent Struck at Emesa, 194-195 AD 2.95g, 17.5mm RIC 417 Curious, the obverse legend appears to be crowded so that the end reads CO II or COS I. Also a star below the bust and a dot after the reverse legend which are not on the examples I've looked at. Thoughts?
I love it and the type! Not to nitpick, but aren't these usually shown with the crescent at the bottom, legend starting at 7:00?
I suppose so, but I'm being lazy and don't want to re-shoot the image just now. But thanks for pointing it out little sister (as opposed to Steve's moniker as little brother - so I guess you guys are like brother and sister).
Not one to argue...well I am but never mind....the obverse legend reads COS I-I with the second I being directly under the bust. Nice. I am always on the lookout for the COS I-I or COS - II coins. Here's one of my COS I-I fpr comparison and a particularly strange IMP CA L SEP S-EV PER AVG COS - II
=> TIF ... man, I hate to state the obvious but ... => our Big-bro is a total prick, eh? Pretty sure he's adopted ... Dad said that Bing was raised by wolves (smelly wolves, with ticks)
Great coin! But I was going batty looking at the reverse in that orientation. Here you go. Problem is, now, it's lit from the bottom up, but in the case of this coin it looks rather cool...
Very nice! I only have a couple and neither has the split COS I-I. I also like that Charlie Tuna shaped flan flaw that takes out the S.
that's a very nice one bing...i i dig the moon and stars reverse. on that bust he looks kind of like he's sad though...cheer up there ol' sep!
At the moment there are 38 Emesa and one Alexandria denarii on vcoins. These include a couple rather scarce ones and one very high grade common one that is priced higher than I paid for my Pertinax denarii. A few are reasonably priced by my standards. Of course I value these higher than most, it seems, since the low grade ones JA tried to sell for me went unsold. Emesa denarii are available in good shape unless you want some of the scarcer ones which you take as they come. At the Baltimore show I saw a nice example of the SS on horseback Emesa for a very fair price but I have slightly better so I did not buy it. There was a time I was buying all I saw but those days have gone.
