the think the mint is doing WAY too much with coinage...... i mean i thought the 50 state program was great and all but then they went too the nickle then the dollar. it wont be long before the penny dime and the quarter have a new design on them.... im all for new designs but i think they should of left the nickel alone and plus the only reason the goverment is doing this so that they make money of it. and now they are considering changeing the designe for the reverse of the sac everyear. MY theory stick with a design and stick with it and after 50... 60 years then change it. NOT every year !!

that kindof made me mad when the messed up the nickel! those new 2006 nickels are so ugly it makes me want to barf. jeffferson looks like franenstein! i liked the wesward journey series nickels but not the 2006 and 2007. i hope they don't change the cent obverse! that would really make me angry. they take a once good design, change it and its ugly. pretty soon all the coins will be ugly. what happened when coins use to be simple? what i mean is look at the old quarters. eagle reverse and now there are states on them. and look at the old nickels, a profile of jefferson, now its a full face of jefferson. i like it better when coins have a profile. it seems the mint is changing from the profile to the whole view. just leave the coins alone!!

Is that a confirmed fact? And who are 'they'? The mint? I have not heard anything about changing the reverse design.

Us coin collectors are gonna be broke before these things are half way through, if they keep coming out with more and more coins at once. Wish they would spread them out a little bit.

The U.S. needs to change its designs of the regular circulation coins. The designs of the 1c.,5c.,10c.,& 25c. coins have become old & dated.I believe that they should be changed to designs that represent what America is today, not what America was 60 or more years ago.

Does anyone else agree with me?

    Aidan.

Sure is. Dubya has signed the law.

Well, the news reports on coinage legislation are usually on page 14 under the Burger King ads, so if you don't read the coin magazines you'll never know a bill has been signed into law. ;)

Hmm, that is about the Lincoln cent, not the Sacagawea dollar, right? Would be interesting to know whether that rumor about changing the design for the Sac reverse every year (see above) is just that, or more ...

Wonderful! So half the legislators are pushing to change the 1 cent coin, and the other half are trying to abolish the ruddy thing...
I wish they would stick to 1 design per year at most instead of complicating things so much with 2 new nickels, 4 new cents, etc etc... BTW what happens to the quarter come 2009?

I agree, but don't think every issue should be treated like a commemorative coin. I once tried to keep up with all current mint issues, but they broke my budget several years ago. I just pick & choose now.:thumb:

While the mint has the authority to change coin designs if they are over 25 years old, most of the changes being instituted are coming from our legislators. The success of the State Quarters program has led them to think they know enough about coins to become more active in their constant redesign and/or modification.

Ya know, it wasn't very many years ago that the exact opposite was being said on the pages of every coin forum there is. Collectors everywhere were clamoring for change, new designs for all of our circulating coins. And they had been for decades. But at every turn the requests and campaigns for new designs failed. And when they did fail collectors would scream in protest all the louder.

Then all of a sudden, the powers that be began to listen. Proposals for new designs came up in Congress and were approved ! The impossible had happened. Which brings us to now. And now what do we have ? Complaints - again.

Moral of the story - be careful what you ask for. You might just get it.

I remember when there were no silver coins of 90% since 1964 and the only thing we had was the Ikes 40% until 1982 the Washington Halves. That was what we needed. I think the Mint then realized collectors were willing to pay for the coins they wanted

    No they are not.

the law mandating the changes on the reverse of the cent in 2009 was signed into law on Dec 22, 2005 and it doesn't say anything about an 09 VDB.

The Mint does NOT have the authority to change the designs even after25 years. After the 25 years the Secretary of the TREASURY has the authority to change the designs without the consent of Congress.

Personally I with they would adopt my plan for design change. Change ONE coins design every five years. That way collectors could look forward to a new design appearing at a reasonable interval, the public would see an occasional change in their coins, and by the time you get back around to the first coin again 25 to30 years will have passed and it can be changed again without Congressional approval. This would also mean that no design would last longer than thirty years (No long stagnant period like we currently have) and the coinage could be kept fresh and vibrant reflecting more of the era remembered those those alive and living in it rather than a stranglehold on great granddad's era.

GDJSMP is right on his history. In the 60's, 70's, 80's, an 90's we kept begging for design changes. the Treasury's answer was always no because they said you couldn't have more than one design for a coin in circulation at a time. People would get very confused and counterfeiting would become a big problem because people wouldn't be able to tell if a coin was good or not. They had to be drug kicking and screaming into the 50 state quarter program, until they saw the seniorage from the DE quarters. Suddenly a multitude of designs was a great thing, and they were eager to testify before Congress FOR new design programs.

Conder, thanks for the correction. The point I was trying to make was that it did not take an act of Congress after 25 years without a design change.

Now we just need them strongly consider your proposal for changing one coin every 5 years. I like the tought and agree it would help to keep the designs more representative of the era they exist in.

I actually love all of the design changes the mint is making, I remember all of the years where nothing was changed and it really slowed the hobby. Now that there are so many changes you have many options to pursue in terms of collecting, anf the great thing is the mint is making many type coins that will be done for one year only.

In a few years I think people will look back and be happy that they collected during this period once they see how impressive the matured collections will be.

Anyone know if they plan on doing something with dimes at any point? I mean they've messed with all the other coins (other than halves) so they could do something with dimes, too. How about a different design for each term Ike served or something?

Or, to promote the hobby how about every year change the design of the dime to an old design, year 1 is a draped bust, year 2 capped bust, year3 liberty seated, year 4 barber, year 5 mercury. After that come up with something else. I actually like this idea because as a college student I can't really afford to buy many capped bust dimes but some new ones would be cool. They could even come out with a few per year because some of these designs had more than 1 variety.

Lastly, I don't relaly like the design of the half dollars that much. I'd like to take Kennedy off but a lot of people wouldn't go for that but the design is kind of boring.
