A while ago I had a CT pal PM me that my AR Macedonian shield coin was one that was commonly faked and to compare for duplicates that it looked like, and that would prove its a modern forgery. I thought I was reasonably in the clear as none of the posted forgeries I looked through matched mine... And then I just came across this in an auction. Here's my coin and then their coin: I don't think they are exact. But I'm no expert and they do look close. Do these set off red flags for any of you? Or could this be a die match that helps prove my coins authenticity? Or something else entirely? I really would like to know whether my coin is legit or not. Any help here is appreciated. Ps, sorry for the "real or fake thread" I don't know who "coined" the phrase, "when there's doubt there's doubt" but I use it often and would like to remove the doubt either way it turns out
I cannot answer your question. They look very close, but the reason for that I don't know. Personally, I think I would send this off for authentication or you will always have that "doubt". BTW, the saying comes from the movie Ronin (it may have earlier origins).
Not an obverse die match. Look at the pattern of dots at the 10:00 position. The reverse die may well be a match. A die match on one side and not the other argues for authenticity, in my opinion.
Agreed. To me it looks like the M at 11 o’clock on the reverse has a slightly different angle too, but I could be fooled by dark areas.
I agree....Obverse is quite different...The MA/KE lettering is completely different as are the shapes of the semi-circular forms around the peripheral...Reverse looks pretty close to me...
I don't think the reverse is a die match either. The M is formed differently and is not the same distance from the helmet. Edit: it could be the angles playing tricks on me though.
It is not the same die, as you can tell from the shape of the letters (they are slightly different) and if the other one is a forgery than yours is likely authentic, unless there is an industry of forgers cranking out different dies, which seems to me unlikely.
