The first question is about a set I have that are in black fold case type things. I have years 1990-2000. Link to Picture is below...On the inside cover it lists World Events, Sports, Songs & Movies that were hits that year. http://www.flickr.com/photos/71627478@N08/6467975443/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/71627478@N08/6467975121/in/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/71627478@N08/6467974587/in/photostream/ I am VERY new to this whole deal. The only reason I am even here is because a few years ago my Papaw left me his entire coin collection and I recently decided to go thru it and see what all was there. I dont know what any of this is worth but here is a list of a few things that caught my eye. Maybe someone could help me out or tell me where I can get a book with price lists or something. Thanks! Proof Sets 1982S (this has a gold looking coin in it also) 1977S 1980S (This has a $1 coin a 1/2 dollar coin as well as quarter, dime, nickel, penny) 1987S 1981S 1972S 1979S (This also has the $1 coin, 1/2 dollar coin etc) Mint Sets 1974 (has 2 pennies?) 1776-1976 (has $1 coin, 1/2 dollar etc) I have both P and D mint on this one 1984D (has D coin in it?) 1984P (has P coin in it?) 1974D has $1, 1/2 dollar etc 1965 has a blue token type of thing in it and the dime looks weird beside the date? 1911 nickel 1903 quarter 1928M quarter? 1869 & 1870 2cent pieces 1839 large cent i have a TON of 1943 silver colored pennies. some are in bad shape but I have a 43D, 43S and a 43 with no mint that are in perfect condition, possibly uncirculated, they are in coin sleeves 1940 liberty dollar 1939 1/2 dollar 1896 dollar I also discovered a coin in pretty bad shape. all i can make out on the front is the dates 1933 1945 and the word Roosevelt I also found a couple coins that im pretty sure are not american lol. one says 1909 penny and has "edwardvs vii dei ga brittmn rex fid def ind imp" the other says 1743 has the word copy on it and says "vtraque vnum m" on one side and "vdg hispan etind rex philip" on the other side
Regarding those "special year" coins IzzysMom, they're not particularly valuable unless you can find someone who collects them and would be willing to pay a premium for them. Interesting packaging though. The mint and proof sets you list are fairly common and don't command much money. On the '79 set check for "clear s", "filled s". The clear s is the more rare and valuable set. Same thing with the '81 set. The 1965 set is a "Special mint set". Some think it's a cross between a mint and a proof coin. To achieve the highly polished effect of the coins the mint polished the dies rather than the planchets. The '43 silver cents are actually zinc coated steel. Edit: One more thing. You will do well to pick up a copy of A Guide Book of United States Coins (The Red Book) by R. S. Yeoman. The local public library should have a few copies, but you'll want to have a copy for yourself I'm sure. They're fairly reasonable in price.
The 1982 proof set had a spot in the lens for a Susan B. Anthony dollar coin to be placed. However, the Mint ended striking the coin in 1981. The vendor, whom produces the lenses for the Mint's proof sets had already sent the order to the Mint for use, or the Mint already had them for use. Since they no longer were making the SBA dollars, they made a Mint token to go into the proof sets that year, in the spot where the SBA dollar would have been. The 1979 & 1980 proof set's dollar coin is the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin. 1979 was the year the SBA dollars were first released.
Those are sets put together and sold by a private company, not by the US Mint. As such they have no value in particular.
