I can across this cent and have a question about toning. It seems difficult to get any good info on this. On the top of the reverse...is this toning or something like heat damage?

    thanks!

The Obverse has a fingerprint so I'm thinking that the issue on the Reverse has to do with the way the person held it and what substance they had on their fingers.

At the actual time that fingerprints get put on a coin the fingerprints are invisible - you can't see them. Oh you might be able to see them if you tilt the coin at just the perfect angle, but other than you can't see them. It is only after time has passed and they have etched into the surface that they become visible.

And that's why I wouldn't make it in Forensics. LOL

It's toning, looks quite ordinary to me. You can also see a bit of it on the corresponding position of the obv (about 6 o'clock) just inside the rim. That is also typical.

It's possible the toning and fingerprint are related in some way, but it just as equally possible that they are completely unrelated. And given the overall condition of the coin I suspect the latter is the case.

What I'm talking about is this, the coin looks to be in fairly decent condition for its age which suggest that somebody saved it when it was fairly new. And the fingerprint, given its location, could have easily gotten there while the coin was being pressed into an album hole by its owner so he could save (collect) the coin.

I like the coin and the tone also. In my opinion, I would slab it or put in a 2x2, it's a keeper. Thanks for posting it. Thanks GDJMSP for the expert opinion also!
