    Hello all,

I came across this in a roll of Buffalo Nickels I have. It has a bit of a rainbow hue to it. In hand it is slightly darker than in the photos... almost like a gun metal / blued steel. What’s everyone think?

    Thanks!

I think that’s a beautiful coin you’ve got there! Beautiful condition with rainbow toning? Best combination in my opinion

Is it normal for circulated coins to get toning like that? I know many buffalos are weakly struck so this probably isn’t as worn as many circulated coins but just wondering if toning is usually only on Uncirculateds

Yes, perhaps this coin was just held for a long time in someones piggy bank, and allowed to tone. This coin looks like it was in a roll for decades. Sometimes I find gorgeous looking cents from the 60's similar but it is a nice find.

I dunno. I'll cast a dissenting vote. Toning like that on a well-circulated nickel coin does not occur naturally, from what I've seen. It may have been exposed to some soap and water at some point, or...who knows. If you like it..hey..beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But personally, I'm not a fan.
