I have just bought a 1720 shilling (EF) but it has a toning line, according to seller. Can someone explain what a toning line is and if this is significantly bad news or not? I was relieved to hear it wasn't a scratch, cloud and silver lining and all that.

    Many thanks,

Something like that happens when the coin is in a holder and the holder gets a crack or cut in it. That lets the air get to the coin in just that spot and it forms a a dark toning line.

Just an update on this one........since I sent it back as overgraded with this stripe of a toning line across the obverse, the seller has not been able to pass it on to anyone else and is still up for sale
........I did the right thing in sending it back me thinks.......J
