Some older slabs, like these PCI, and the "fatty" NGC, are known to tone coins. Sometimes attractively. I don't want these to tone farther, so I wonder if I should crack them out. Though I think they might be labeled Artificially Toned down the road if they are not kept in the PCI slab. Advice appreciated. What would you do?
I would not crack either of those two out. The Peace Dollar is a newer PCI slab (circa 2012) where a lot of AT and overgraded coins are found. The color on that Peace Dollar would almost certainly land it in an Unc Details holder. The Morgan is an older red "problem" PCI holder. This was from the 1990s and considered a good era. Some of these red holders were cracked and then straight graded at PCGS or NGC. But plenty were correctly attributed problem coins. Wheel marks are hard to see (especially from that photo). I'm guessing they are there and it's unlikely another TPG will miss them. The color is attractive and the older holder adds a small premium too, so I could see this coin selling well as-is (better than if it was raw or in a PCGS/NGC details slab). In terms of the toning progressing, I've seen people mentioning that coins crossed from PCI to PCGS kept toning (mainly Silver Eagles). So some are leaving PCI toners in the PCI slabs as they might be more stable (as long as the environment you store them in is safe enough).
