The end game for all toners... enjoy those 'vivid' colors while they last ; ) http://cgi.ebay.com/1883-O-PCGS-MS6...29?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3368831f75
Yowza, that thing was either stored improperly, or AT'ed and not preserved correctly. EDIT: Wonder if PCGS would buy it back for the premium that toning once commanded?
whose bidding on this? Sorry but that coin is plain ugly, and I think Toning Death was a good way to put it.
awww come one.... aren't those shades of black sooo "vibrant". ha.... Still amazes me how those deep blue and red "vibrant", "vivid", "monstors"... sell for 3-5k sometimes 20-50x premium, and only turn into this in the future. GREAT INVESTMENT !!! I'd guess this one, like so many, was AT'ed and the toning process had not completely dialed down to normal levels before being slabbed.... or was stored in a fish bowl... dunno. Either way, I can't see this guy getting into a slab in it's current heavily corroded state. A great example of why NOT to go crazy buying toned coins.
It matches the certificate, but no photo. Maybe slab and certificate is bogus, but hard to tell from photo. Like it or not, it is market acceptable if the slab is good. The toning was either present, or it was initiated and encouraged by corrosive chemicals in air or a gas mixture, either "naturally" or "artificial". It doesn't matter if it is a true slab, as it is PCGS "opinion". Jim
This is not an attractive coin but that won't stop people from bidding it up because it has a "rainbow." BTW, looks possibly if not probably NT to me; the progression is right.
Imo, the slab and the coin are legit. The toning looks natural too, just the pics (maybe scans) are really bad. The coin definitely has dark toning but I bet it looks much better in hand, the overexposed, over-saturated pics make it look pretty nasty.
the coin does look legit. too bad the black is so dark. i have a franklin that has gone down that road but mine looks so much better
The color progressions are correct. Unfortunately, baha is correct, black is the last stage of toning it will only go down hill.
Yeah, when I saw this I was weighting whether the coin was "savable" or not. The black is mostly glossy so I think I good dip could save the coin. It looks NT to me, I have seen tons of coins like that. We had some severe poster children for toning coin deaths here a few months back. Matte black is severe corrosion, and I have never seen one dipped without surface damage. Most glossy black come out without surface damage, but will usually look "overdipped" since so much luster is gone. Great thread about the dangers of toning, and why I am uber sad to see the market pushing people to AT and ruining a ton of good coins. Honestly, people spend too much time on color. The attention should be on original surfaces, which is what newbies miss. An expensive toned coin should have original surfaces, which is a great thing to have whether a coin is toned or not. I fully support premiums for original surfaces, since most 100 year old coins do not have them anymore. Just focusing on color is what misleads too many collectors nowadays. Just my opinion. Chris
