Eisenhower 40% Silver Proof Dollar (Lot Of 2) 71 72 "Damaged", "toned", "to-may-to", "to-mah-to"... I'll take that at 2/3 spot, shipped.
Killer find! Let us know what they are like when you receive them. Unfortunately, according to the item description, you must not be a "Bonafide Coin Collector" since you bought these coins and"will absolutely hate them!" I guess you can't win 'em all...
He actually sent me a message soon after I bought them -- "You bid on these things so quickly did you read that they are damaged Proofs? Please advise. Thanks." I thanked him for his class, and assured him that, yes, I wanted them.
You know, though, I'm a little less self-satisfied now that I look at his auctions I already missed... Bulk Lot 90% Silver $21 Face Value Peace Dollars Peace dollars for $21 apiece? Rats. "Incomplete set" -- well, at least it's not like I missed out on some keys or anything. WHAT THE... 1921: check. 1928: check. :headbang:
Hmm... looking at the pics this morning, I see that the slabs say "United States Proof Dollar", and do not say "Silver". I haven't seen any Ikes in their original mint packaging -- should the word "Silver" be on there somewhere, as it is on today's proof sets?
These Ikes are known as "brown box ikes" because they originally came in a brown box, with that plastic case. They are indeed 40% silver. Also, they are nortorious to get the blue feild toning to them.
NT or deliberately toned in the holder? Nice purchase. If the toning is attractive in hand & you are thinking of having them slabbed, should they be submitted to the TPG intact in their holders to add credibility to their authenticity & NT? I'm just curious if anyone has experience submitting really toned coins in government packaging.
No, the 'brown box' Ikes in the single coin Mint sealed packaging say "Eisenhower" above the coin, the coin is surrounded by five stars and below the coin it says "United States Proof Dollar" on two lines. This is repeated on each side of the slab and goes for the 40% silver Ikes as well.
Thanks for the reassurance, guys. I don't anticipate getting these slabbed, although I've been trying to accumulate ten candidates to do the ANACS "dollars and cents" 10 for $100 thing...
Well, as it turned out, he was right. The first one has thick haze, not blue toning; the second one has ugly brown spotting that looks almost like incipient corrosion, although I don't think it is. Ah, well -- as I said, still well under bullion. It's just a shame they arrived too late for me to sell them at the weekend coin show.
Well, the coins could be dipped in acetone and that might clean them up nicely should you crack them from their original Mint holders. They may grade well with better eye appeal too. However, there are a lot of high grade silver proof Ikes out there and you probably don't want the added expense from a TPG. You could still try to sell them for the silver content at the show if you haven't lost your initial investment with the recent dip in PMs.
Yer lucky I didn't spot that listing or you'd have paid a bit more........................ Or I would have.
