I had a very difficult time capturing the rainbow toning on this lustrous beauty that I received today, so I am posting the sellers pictures for the color. I could only capture the detail. The coin is somewhat weakly struck on Liberty's forehead and there are a few hits, but has pretty good details overall and a wonderful color. It also has full luster, and is a stunning addition to my toned collection!! It needs to be viewed in hand to be appreciated, but please comment.
thanks! what would you grade? It seems to have full luster in the fields, but there looks to possibly be some rub on the obverse devices around the area of strike weakness. I have a hard time determining that on these toned coins. Also, it's interesting with this coin as there is no "i" in "Liberty" as you can see. Do you think there could be some type of metal fill in, like on some of the mottos on the old bust half dollars?
Killer coin. Can't tell what it would grade as I don't collect these at this time. Toning is very nice.
I noticed that the "I" in LIBERTY wasn't present. It doesn't matter, though, on this coin. The hair detail, and other detail, clearly shows that this coin is of a higher grade. Normally, with the "I" missing, one would grade a Liberty nickel VG-8 or VG-10, but this coin is a nice AU with a weak strike and also possibly some grease in the die covering up the "I." Note the weak strike on the stars on the obverse at 8 o'clock and 12 o'clock, and also the lack of detail on the wreath on the reverse, with corresponding good detail on the obverse.
