I have just purchased some $5 Siver Australian coins from a person whose spouse collected them before his untimely demise, in a house fire Since the coins like their past owner were in a house fire, I wanted to ask the group about toning. Most of thes coins although sealed in hard plastic by the Australian Mint show some toning around the edges. I have a similar Coin that I purchased from the mint that has a little more toning around the edges than the ones I just bought. Do I question the value of the coins? Possibly from heat ??? they could have had the toning prior to the fire. Do I take thenm to a dealer to evaluate? Thoughs??? Richard
So many things cause toning. Heat is certainly a huge source. Asking a dealer or well versed collector is never a bad idea.
Dealers Wished I lived in your area to have you view them. Have not been able to find a dealer in this area that will even discuss foreign coins. Will probably take them to the FUN show in January. Richard
Thanks Looking forward to meeting you. I was supose to be in Wisconsin this evening flights cancelled will go tomorrow. Christmas with son and granddaughter Even better -I know my gift is a gold coin- Don't know what, but my wife says he spent more than he should. Hee Hee. Price is all relative. If I'm not on line for a few days Merry Christmas to all & If that offends any one I hope you enjoy the New year- Jewish- English or Chinese. Richard
*sigh*...nothing like Christmas in Wisconsin. I'm so jealous that you're going but wish you a safe trip. I was born & raised there and I just don't seem to get back quite as often as I would like. Although this year I still get snow for the holiday even though we're in Texas! Crazy I tell ya! Have some good cheese and venison for me
