Picked up a nice toned 83-CC last week. PCGS 66.

Hi, John! Can you see a difference in the height of the digits? I know that it isn't that easy when it is in a slab, but I was just curious. ~ Chris

The depth of the punched date, you mean? For 1880-83, there usually is a difference between the 18 and 8x. It's the most pronounced in 1880. I'll take a closer look later.

Yes! I remember checking mine, but it has never been mentioned in other threads, here. I recall reading in the VAM "Bible" about the discrepancies that were caused by the 4-digit logotype when the Mint changed from 1879 to 188X.

They took the 7 off the hub in 1880, leaving a 18 that would be overpunched with a 4-digit date. Many 1880 dies were prepared by filling the 79 and redating as 1880. Some show evidence of that, an unknown number don't.

Interesting. I never saw the difference in numeral size even when paying close attention to the date when Vamming this 1883 cc VAM 5

Beautiful coin. You can't go wrong with an MS 66 CC.
