Meow did quarter CRH today. Besides 3 rolls of new Georgia ATBs in the batch, there was only one other coin that stood out. It is a heavily toned 2017 D Indiana ATB. The obverse is blue and purple, and the reverse is yellow purple and blue. Is it artificially toned, or not? Looks like it might be MS 63ish, and Meow put it in a 2x2 snaplock. Some laundry detergents give coins that sort of color when they go through the wash. Looks nice to me though.

$100 worth of quarters from the bank today, and this was only one that was toned in any way. And this thing is toned very dark. It looks a little better than the pics, as the colors are a bit hard to capture with the camera.

Its so cool everyone has their own form of collecting, and what they think is sweet. I like the fact that you like it. I would keep it as well, or sleezebay it

Kinda purty. Only worth a quarter, of course, but still pretty cool.

There was a thread last summer. It began as a mistake and turned into an experiment for one CT member. He purchased a proof set that sat on his dashboard in the heat of The summer in Dallas Texas. As I recall the sun turned his coins a very similar purplish hue. Perhaps your quarter spent a summer on a hot dashboard?

It does seem to resemble heat-induced toning.

Speaking of this; Meows last few quarter CRH have yielded many 2018 Georgia ATB in gem BU. So, Meow decided a few days ago; Even before finding this toned quarter, that Meow would conduct a toning experiments. Since Meow was awash in these very brilliant BU quarters, Meow placed some of them in various containers and places around the house. Meow might actually forget about them over time, but hopefully when found again they will exhibit some interesting toning.

I live in Georgia and Cumberland Island is visible on the horizon from one location on my daily commute, but I haven't seen one of those quarters yet!

Wow that is surprising. Meow thinks that the next quarter in line is in circulation, or very close to being in circulation already. When Meow's state quarter was at banks in OBW; They has a sign offering them to customers. It said "$10 a roll, one per customer." Right now if Meow went to the bank again for quarters, many Georgia's would surely be found. It sure is strange that you don't have them in local circulation already.

I haven't really looked. Now perhaps I will. Haven't used much cash in my transactions lately- mostly plastic.

It might be a great time to get yourself some BU home State ATB quarters for face value.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

That looks like heat and chemicals were applied. That looks like artificial toning.

Hey, I'm curious, if a gassed or otherwise artificially toned coin is soaked in pure acetone, will the acetone remove the toning? I know it won't with naturally toned coins.

Meow can tell you for sure in this instance no. Why? Because Meow already did it to this coin before putting it in the snaplock. Notice the spot under the N and the I in UNITED? That is a untoned spot. When Meow rinsed it in acetone, a little piece of a gummy substance fell off revealing a that silver spot.

Meow makes it a habit to rinse every "keeper" so it will stay the way it is longer, hopefully.

Meow should try soaking that coin over night in acetone to see what happens.

From what Meow has found, what wont come off in a 1 hour soak; Wont come off in 24 hour soak. Besides Meow was scared to rinse it in the first place, soaking it any longer wont make it any better.

Yeah, I guess that's true. If it was PVC damage it would be different.
