Is of the Buffalo variety. 1901 Ten variety to be exact. LOVE this bill. Sending it in next week for grading, i'm predicting 15-25. Ignore the discoloring on the picture, there's no staining.
That's a fantastic note! If you don't mind me asking, what did the pawn shop charge? I love my local pawn shop; you can get killer deals on coins and notes there. My guy sells Peace dollars and Morgans for a dollar over spot, and junk dimes and quarters for spot!
Nice find! Most of the pawn shops I've been to don't carry paper currency like this. I'm also curious to find out how much you paid for it.
800 was the ask, I got 'em to 550 and tax. I know it will grade atleast 15, which will put it at quite a bit over what I paid. So i'm very pleased.
Thanks guys. I spent a good 20 minuites working on the deal. He showed it to me when I was in browsing their morgans and it was instant love, but I had to play it cool and was like "Oh wow, what a great note, but what horrible shape, I'll have to pass but I appreciate you showing it to me". I went back later in the day and told him I had been thinkin about it and would like to see it again. When he showed it to me I himmed and hawed for a bit and asked if would take 400. From there he said he needed 700. I said will 5 get it done? He said i'm gonna have to stick to 700, since he had only had it in for a week or so. I remarked about how he's there to sell, not to be a showcase. He acknowledged my point, went in the back for a bit, came back and said 550 was the absolute best he'd go. And the deal was done. I'm a fairly seasoned graded note collector to know this will grade above where I bought it at. I stopped by a local shop and showed it to a guy I deal with often and he too was impressed with the quality and expected grade. Pawn Shops for me are far and away the best chance to get an awesome deal. The problem is (atleast here) out of 8 or so shops, only 1 ever gets anything in. Times like this are super fun, I just wish they happened more often!
Looking at my Red Book if it grades 12 value is $600-$750 at 20 the value is $1,000-$1,275. Is that what you are thinking or am I off?
A little update. I sent it into PMG for standard grading, asked for the Pedigree of "Black Diamond". They emailed me a couple days ago telling me the graders will not place that on the label. That REALLY ****es me off. So I replied stating that was ridiculous considering it's the name of the Buffalo that was modeled for the bill, please help me understand the reasoning for not allowing it?" 3 days later, no response. This really irritates me. For 100.00 + I should be able to put the name of the animal on the bill.... Am I missing something here? Thoughts?
I think the cost to grade the note depends on the value of the note. The cost to grade a Fair $1 1957 SC will be different from a Gold Bank Note. I guess the reason they won't allow your phrase on the holder, is so they don't have to allow everybody to request their own text. Some of which may be less appropriate than yours, yet those people will claim "but you did it for this guy." I don't think it's anything personal.
Funkee is right on. While I agree for $100 you should be able to have a customized message placed on a holder by the TPG, it is not something which is typically done. If they started allowing casual messages to be placed on holders the next thing you know people will request things like "Jon, Happy Birthday!" or whatever which could well diminish the professional appearance of the TPG.
There is no reason to charge that much to grade that note, which is a common Speelman White Buffalo. You're paying 12-15% of value for a slab at $100. They charge more for *truly* expensive notes, but Buffalo notes are not rare. PCGS fee chart shows standard submission for this note under Regular fees should be $35, for a note valued up to $3k.
There seems to be more discussion about the price of the grading rather than the refusal of the Black Diamond. Here's a price break down - Standard Grade $40.00 Pedigree - $3.00 Oversized Holder - $3.00 High Resolution photo - $10.00 Handling Fee - $5.00 Return Shipping Fee - $20.50 Shipping to them fee - $22.85 Total - $104.35 Here is their standards for pedigree - Pedigree: A unique characteristic of a note that may be advantageous to have listed on the PMG tag label. Examples may be the name of a known collection or hoard from which the note came, or the fact that the note is a Mule. Pedigrees will print in green ink on the front side of the PMG tag label. While i'm with you guys on avoiding crap pedigrees, I fail to see how Black Diamond could possibly fall under that category. NGC and PCGS both have special tags that honor Black Diamond, PCGS Currency allows the scam tag of things like the infamous "Boca Raton Run", etc etc. I just fail to see the logic behind PMG's refusal of not only the Black Diamond tag, but ignoring my request as to why they're refusing it.
