I took my usual Friday afternoon trip to the store to see what I could find to appease my addiction. To my surprise, they actually had some new 14th century hammered coins so I picked up a couple, plus a more "modern" thaler which I'll show in the next post. First is a silver penny of Edward III.I have one minted at London but this one is from Durham, with the typically mushy strike from that facility. The long cross on the back has an interesting variation, the lower tip of the cross is shaped like a crozier, those things that popes, archbishops and cardinals carry. It's a first for me. Second,a Bulgarian grosch of Ivan Alexander and his son Michael Asen IV.I bought it because Bonedigger has one and I don't,or didn't... continued...........
Next, and this was just impulse...a Prussian Thaler/Mark of Friedrich Wilhelm III struck in 1828.It was a bit above what I wanted to spend but a little "negotiation" brought it into line with Krause values. The inscription on the reverse translates "BENEDICTIONS of the MAN MINING INDUSTRY" whatever that means. There is also an edge inscription "God With Us" Check out how similar the "2" in the date is to the ones on U.S. Bust Halves of the same period.Pretty cool.
Very nice pieces Mike. Yes, I do have one of those rascals Thanks for posting the pictures. Take Care Ben
