Anyone ever use Renaissance Wax on older (like colonials) Copper Coins? I have several I "DUG" while metal detecting that are good candidates for preserving before they lose all recognition. I tried it several years ago on some IHC's and they seem fine still but unsure whether to try it on coins like these two examples of mine. I hope I didn't start another debate.
Sal, I'd probably say that would be an acceptable preservative on an already ED coin. I'm just surprised you have a good firearms preservative wax.
I can't imagine how wax, or any coating, is going to protect better than a hard plastic capsule or a hard flip. I know some people like to to hold their coins in their hands. I don't understand that either. What would I be holding anyway, the edges? But not too tight if it's a plain edge or it might fly away. The second image-- with the double busts-- looks like PVC leeching. If it is, what's the wax going to do for it?
One thing I would like to reiterate is that most of my Colonial coins are "dug" and since surfacing, they have somehow started to lose their appearance and the image other devices may be lost forever w/o some other protection besides a 2x2 flip or other holder. I need to know what to do to protect them if by not using something like this.
The FR01/ AG coins are just in cardboard 2x2 holders and the better condition ones are in "Self slab" holders.
To Wax or Not to Wax, That is the question?? I'll just say I wouldn't recommend it and let it go at that.
I find that Ren Wax will seal in some disease and allow them to continue working. You may have to come back later and remove the Ren Wax and reprocess the coin. JMO
I'll offer this. I wouldn't use wax on an undamaged coin. I agree with others that say the wax can seal in corrosive properties. For a dug piece or something already otherwise damaged, I don't see the harm. I put this together as a gift for my wife some years ago. You can see the ancient coin has some pizazz to it. She wore the piece for a couple years and it became dark, ugly and almost unrecognizable. I did a little work with some wax and it brought some life back into the old piece. I relegated this old Chi-Rho to a jewelry piece so I felt justified in treating it as such. Myself, if I had dug a piece and wanted to transform it from a lifeless hunk of copper, I could see justifying some wax. It is already a damaged coin anyway.
Nice piece! I see that from the first picture to later pictures, you altered the bezel to the coin's edge. Good job!
