Hi everyone. I starting collecting coin/silver a few months ago and have found it to be fun/a good investment/interesting/etc. Anyway, I hadnt thought much about dollar bills but if i wanted to start collecting paper money, where should i start, domestic, foreign? what is cheap, suggestions, comments, help, advice? Thanks!
Find a note Series that you are interested in, study it, read about it, live it, breathe it..then buy it! Stick to your goals no matter how difficult. Become resourceful and engaging in your pursuit! RickieB
I would say collect what catches your eye and what you can afford. That would be a great way to start. I would also recommend purchasing a few books first to see what truly interests you. There are certain banknotes that I really like but to most people they wouldn't have any value. I'm okay with that because I get plenty of enjoyment out of studying them. Some possible ways to collect might be: series, country, denomination, size, paper/polymer, places you visit, etc... I tend to collect banknotes that carry some meaning for me. You should also visit the links to some of the sites created by other members. Also, read some of their previous posts to learn more before purchasing. I've learned bunches from members such as DeOrc, RickieB, and See323. There are plenty of other great members that I haven't had the pleasure of conversing with yet but are just as helpful. Best thing to do is just ask any of the questions you might have before purchasing.
http://www.pagescoinsandcurrency.com is this a good website, they sell a lot of different world notes and some of them seem cheap. What do you guys think?
Decide what you want to collect in the currency world first. It's wide open just like coins. When you have made your decision do as mentioned earlier READ UP ON IT. When you decide what you want to collect ask for more advice. I'm sure someone can turn you on to some good reading.
I want to collect cheap world money just as a start since they are cheap and they look cool. Any good websites or should I look in real life for this stuff? Also, are there any good online resources to read up on? Thank you.
Well, I have $50 in limbo that I use to go to the bank and trade for coins. I traded the money for pennies, then nickels, then pennies, then pennies again etc. My point in saying this is, you can do the same (with $100, $200, whatever), except with dollar bills. Look for interesting serial numbers (55555555, 12345678 etc.) and star notes, and when you find one that's worth something, keep it, if not, sell it and use the money to buy an old note that you like. I'd do that, but I don't have the interest in notes that I have in coins. To me, there's nothing better than finding a coin or bill for face value, and either adding it your collection or selling it for a premium. Just my... sorry, gotta say it... two cents worth.
To begin with if you have no idea as to what you want to collect try buying a couple of bulk lots as cheaply as you can then sort through them. You will have fun finding out about the notes and it gives you a fairly good grounding in understanding world notes, buy books
I"m not really into world paper money but De Orc's suggestion sounds like a winner. I have also seen "bargain bins" at coin shops and shows. Most of that is worth the paper it's printed on but some cool designs.
I store mine in albums using different types of sleeves (PVC Free), some take 2 notes otheres 3 or 4 depending on size. you can also store them in individual sleeves it is all a matter of choice realy.
