I have been debating if I should have my rotated die georgia state quarter slabbed and gradded or not. I know it can cost a pretty penny to have them gradded and slabbed... and I'm wondering if it's really worth the cost to me to have it done. It's half way between a 90% and 180 % rotation. and I paid $35 for it... I know there were at least a few of these kinds of errors that got out of the mint, but how many is unknown and despite my intense searches I have yet to find another georgia rotated die for sale. It's not mint condition, probably not even AU due to the multiple tiny scratches that I see on it. But it does seem to be a rarity that is hard to find. I would appreciate everyone's opinion on if I should get my state quarter graded or not. And if so then by what grading agency? I'm confused at to which one is considered the best. Thank you in advance for you're advice.
This is my uneducated opinion: Your coin has value because of the error, not the grade. If it were in some high-grade unc. then I might say slab it so you could say that you had one of the higher grades of this error, but if it not outstanding due to grade, then you are back to the error being the value. Now, with many coins it is good to have it slabbed for authentication alone, but here I think what you see is what you get. It is rotated, which is easy enough for anyone to confirm, so there is no value added by slabbing it in that regard. If it were mine I would keep it as is. Not sure what these ego for, but I find it hard to imagine that you would add value with a slab after paying 35 already.
I on the other hand would slab the coin. Error collectors as a whole look for slabbed material. While rotation is not the greatest of error coins, resale value is based solely on what the collector is willing to pay. There are no real good price guides for error coins. Each is unique in their own way. If you belong to the ANA use NGC. If not, you will have to either join their service or use a dealer. PCGS works the same way.
oh, one more thing. I dont' belong to ANA. Which grade service in your opinion is the best? or most recognized as high quality grading? NGC? or PCGS? I'm still uncertain if i'll get it graded, but if i do i want it to be by the best and by whom most people will be looking for as the grader. thanks.
