To slab or not to slab?

Do you think a serious collector would rather purchase a coin already in slab or in a raw state?

    Thoughts?

Most collectors would rather buy something already slabbed by either NGC or PCGS.

Not many buy raw for the graded prices. I know I don't.

It is also very dependent on the type of coin.

I usually avoid buying graded or slabbed coins. If I'm dealing with a slabbed coin, I make sure the dealer or whoever knows I'm not paying extra because it's been slabbed and professionally graded, they can take whatever I offer or leave it, plenty of other coins out there to buy. ;)

Just as there are plenty of other buyers out there as well. ;)

  7. I will buy a coin if it meets all of my criteria slabbed or not.

That's how I feel too. I personally prefer slabbed coins...but I won't pay more than the coin (not the slab) is worth. I think slabbed coins are a little easier to sell down the road.

For me, it depends on the coin somewhat. Many of them I can authenticate and grade with no problem. But more than anything it depends on the seller. If I am buying from a dealer I respect and trust there't no need for the coin to be slabbed, even I can't authenticate it myself.

  10. I buy mostly slabbed coins but will sometimes buy raw coins I really want. However, I would not take a chance buying an older, valuable coin raw as many counterfeits exist. TC

Some coins I will buy raw, but the expensive or rare ones I will want to buy slabbed. It saves me the worry that it may be cleaned or worse, a fake.

  12. Buying a coin in a slab will not be 100% protection. Make sure you know what you are buying before you pull the trigger.

Yup, I'd imagine plenty of fakes have slipped past the people who graded and slabbed them. ;)

  14. This is good advice. However, if a major TPG slabs a fake, I think they will pay replacement cost.

  15. Not if it's a fake slab.

  16. Ouch! Now that's just plain wrong. I guess sticking with reputable dealers is the way to go. TC

This is why you need to be an expert wither the coin is slabbed or not. Buying a slabbed coin and assuming it's authentic or even graded properly is a mistake.

To slab or not to slab?

That is a question I keep asking myself over & over again.

I have a lot of raw coins I have collected & purchased over several decades.

Some I think would grade very high, but I have this fear that they might come back as cleaned therefore probably not worth the grading fees :(

Oh yes, I make sure I do some research if its a coin I'm not familiar with. Also the seller must have good reputation. The fake slabs still confuses me, there is a site that shows you how a fake slab looks. But from online pictures they're still hard to tell.
