So I've been torn lately when it comes to my 1995 Gold AGE Set along with the W Silver Eagle. It is still in the gov't packaging and absolutely gorgeous. I've been debating if I should send it off to get graded by PCGS, even though I know the odds of all five coins coming back grading at 70 is slim to none. However, I have gotten a few 70's out of PCGS over the last 6 months. The price jump for a this set in the OGP to al graded PCGS 70 is around $14,000. I've seen the 70 set go on eBay recently for around $22k. So, I'm not really sure what to do and some opinions would be great.
Posting pictures of the coins would help, and we might be able to ell you which ones might grade for a 70 and which aren't worth it?
I can post pictures when I get home and can take them. I mean im the original owner and they're in the OGP. I looked at them the other day and there is no spotting or any type of spots one might see on a coin from the mint.
Simple fact is very few if anyone can tell the diference in 69's and 70's in images and taking them out of the orginal capsules is a good way to damage them. I would be one to think any sets you see graded at all 70's where submitted by dealers sending a large group of the sets.
true...that is unless they are taken by gbroke or Robec :hail: OP, take a shot... With a huge price jump like that, it might be worth the couple hundred or so to take the gamble. It also might be worth it just for the peace of mind in knowing. As the G.I. Joe public service announcement from the 1980's rings a bell here, "knowing is half the battle." Also, you can crack a PCGS slab faster than a B-grade movie actor can crack a pistachio nut so if you want them back in the OGP; wallah.
Rather doubt it, a dealer even having 2 of the sets at the same time is somewhat unlikely. Any other set I'd agree, but not this one. I suspect the most likely scenario would be that somebody assembled a 70 set buying them already slabbed 1 at a time.
I would bet you are correct. Something else to keep in mind. Many proof Silver Eagles that get slabbed by PCGS, gain spots. The reason is not known but it's a fact. If you have it graded, sell it fast. If it turns on you, it going to kill the value.
I'm not sure about NGC. PCGS had or still has a reward for anyone that can figure out what is causing it. The problem is actually in the coins surface but starts showing once it is slabbed.
that makes sense. you can always crack them out. or just send in the ASE and see. that's the money coin and go from there.
Wonder if ebay sellers will use this line when selling slab coins? Buy now Sale fast The price on these coins may not last.
You currently have a pristine set of coins in original packaging. Start pulling out coins out to send them in to get mis-handled by the self proclaimed experts and you no longer have a government issued set let alone a pristine set. And yes, handling pristine coins without cotton gloves, is "mis-handling".
I think I'll probably go ahead and have them graded, see what they come back at. I highly doubt I'll get a 70 on all five. Even if I get a 70 on just the ASE I think I'd be happy
