Now that the 50 state quarters program is completed ( I don't consider DC and the possessions states) I wanted to ask for an opinion on the First Day Coin Covers for these states. I was thinking about submitting them to NGC for grading and "encapsulating". I know the coins would not currently be worth the price of the grading but still wanted to ask if most people here thought it would be still worth it to have all 50 FDCC graded? I would not submit them all at once. I couldn't afford that I appreciate the opinions. Thanks!!!
Not sure which set you have, but I would be willing to bet that most of the quarters you could pick up in PF-69 for less than it would cost you to send yours in. I haven't looked at MS coins but I would guess, the same is probably true for them at the likely levels you have.
I agree. You can purchase already-slabbed coins for less than submission prices. Dealers will send in hundreds or thousands of coins, hoping to get just a few at real high grades. They then dump the rest for peanuts. I don't think any of the grading services give a special attribution for the first day covers, and I don't think those coins are any different.
Yeh it would be cheaper to buy the ones that are already slabed. You just have to be patient and you can get them for cheap prices on ebay. Nickeldude
I took a look at Ebay and the few first day covers that were NGC certified cost as much or more than the submission prices. Even most of the non-certified first day coin covers had starting bids close to or more than the cost of submission. What I'm looking to get in case some may not be familiar is something like the following (see attached pic).
