Hi all, I recently purchased an 1868 Seated Quarter in Pf62 slabbed by PCGS, Now being an NGC man myself and a freak for uniformity i wanted to get it crossed over to NGC, However i also believe the coin will grade higher then a 62, so my question to you fine folks. Crack it our or cross over?
Real beauty there! I think you should learn to live with it and spend the money you would spend on a crossover on another coin. Personally I wouldn't chance something happening to that beauty at all. In case your adamant about the crossover, I'm sure others will help you decide.
Russ. I am very much like you when it comes to uniformity. Here is my two cents. Leave it alone for the time being. PCGS graded coins tend to command higher prices than NGC coins. Not always, but most of the time. I did this several years ago. I had really nice early comm which PCGS graded 64. I thought it was at least a 65 and so I cracked it out and sent it into NGC thinking it would come back higher. Plus, most of my stuff at the time was NGC. It came back the same grade. But now that same grade brought the value of the coin down because it was in a NGC holder and not a PCGS holder. I should have left it alone. I still keep that PCGS sticker as a reminder. I have not made the same mistake again. I have found that in coin collecting, it is best to sleep on it for a few days and give it some serious though before you do anything. I have some some really stupid things with my coins which I wish I could take back. But that is all part of the learning process. Now if you are anything like me...you have probably already made up your mind, but trust me it takes discipline to wait and think things through. Good luck.
Well that depends to me...is that x on the obverse on the case or on the coin? If on the coin leave it, if it's on the holder then I might just send it in.
Thanks for sharing that jaceravone. That's a good perspective. I have mixed/matched coins as well, and like PFCBEGA, it was kind of bothering me. But now, not so much. But why do NGC coins seem to go for less in most cases?
Beautiful coin. You obviously purchased the coin and not the slab. I would leave it right where it is for now. TC
The reason that PCGS slabs sell for higher amounts than the others is due to perception. There is a perception that PCGS is just plain better than the others. Sometimes peoples thoughts are justified, but the grading out of NGC is top tier as well. Now I can't say that for the rest for the other TPGs, but there is definitely a heirarchy within the system. PCGS>>>>NGC>>>>>>ALL OTHERS.
