Would you buy this PCGS coin in old holder and submit for regrading? My buy price would be $320??? Just curious as I am considering purchasing it. How old is the holder? Any ideas?
Dealer bid is $270 for the 78CC in 63. This coin does seem to be fair in grade. It is difficult to tell from the photos but there appears to be a lot of bag contact marks in the field in front of Liberty's face. This is a bit distracting. Based on the photo alone, I would not offer more than $240 for the coin. Of course, this is just one dealers opinion.
Thanks. That is what I was thinking. I have just heard the hype of buying the "old PCGS holders" and was curious. Never did it myself. Guess it goes back to buy the coin not the holder deal.
Well we look for old holders at every show and auction around the nation. But that does not mean we buy them. You have to know your coins. PCGS has really loosened their standards from where they began. If you can spot the small differences in grades, the old holders will be a small opportunity to make quick profits. Now using the example of this 1878-CC dollar. If the coin appeared to be a 64 instead of the 63 the bid price jumps to $410. So if you backed into the deal offering full ask of a 63 at $295 then sold at $400, you make a hundred dollar profit. This is how dealers make their living. It is not in ripping people off, like most believe. It is knowing what to look for, and knowing how to sell it.
PCGS used that slab from its start in 1986 until mid to late 1989. It's hard to say for sure without seeing the coin in hand - but I too would say it is graded accurately. But that is not the question you asked. To be quite honest - yes - I do believe PCGS would today grade that coin as MS64. This IS NOT a recommendation that you buy the coin and try for an upgrade. It is more of a statement of what has already been said. That in my opinion PCGS does not use the same grading standards they once did.
