To box or not to box, that is the question

I am new to collecting. I received my Mark Twain commemorative recently and am asking if the presentation case it came in adds any value? Thanks

Not really. Some people like having the original government packaging (OGP). Most don't care, and there's not really a premium attached to it on the market. Some of the nicer display cases might have a small premium, but I've never noticed.

While it doesn't add too much value, if you do need to sell later on, I would recommend saving all the original packaging (since it will likely decrease how much you can sell it for since many collectors value the packaging).

Does it add value not to most, but if and when you sell it some tend to try to get lower prices because of the condition of the box

If I was looking to buy one down the road, and it came between one with no box and one with a box, I would buy the one with the box first, if the price was the same, or a little bit more.

I agree to keep everything it came with and in good condition if possible, especially with commemoratives. I have dealt with many of these over the years, and it is probably more important for them than it is with any other type of coin.

Some people believe the OGP adds value, but I can't say that I agree. I've had the 2006 SAE 20th Anniversary 3-coin boxes ever since I got them from the Mint, and nobody seems to want to buy them.

Thank you all. I'm still trying to get a handle on this collecting thing. More questions to come, I'm sure. Thanks again

The packaging, while it may not across-the-board add to the "value", it can add liquidity which, if not excessively cumbersome (for your living situation), is reason enough to stash it away imo. Basically, there will be no benefit to not having it, but there may be one to having it when/if the times comes to sell.

Box, no box, nor condition of box can not reduce the value of the coin.

Check the commeratives on ebay. The coins in a tpg slab or come with box and coa sell for more than a coin in a plastic holder only. IMO you should keep the box and coa.

Even if you slab the coin, keep the box and COA.

Original items are worth more over time.
