I don't have many Flavian Egyptian issues and have been looking for a decent Titus. This was one of four Roman Egyptian coins purchased last month. EGYPT, Alexandria. Titus regnal year 3, CE 80/1 billion tetradrachm, 25.5 mm, 12.34 gm Obv: AVTOKTITOVKAIΣOVEΣΠAΣIANOVΣEB; laureate bust right Rev: OMO NOIA; Homonoia seated left on throne, holding olive branch; LΓ in left field Ref: Emmett 233.3, R1; Milne 459 Die shift on obverse. I have a large backlog of unposted coins and haven't had much spare time lately, so I'm posting this without any type of educational or fun writeup . I'd love to see your Roman Egyptian Titus (and other Flavian) coins
That is really a fantastic coin. At the time, Alexandria could produce some rather crude portraits - this is most certainly not one of those. I'm not often envious of other people's coins, however, I can honestly say this is a most enviable addition! Beautifully photographed too.
Nice Titus and great "shadow" double strike. TITUS Billon Tetradrachm OBVERSE: AVTOK TITOY - laureate head right REVERSE: Bust of Serapis right, LB before Struck at Alexandria, Egypt, Year 2 = 79-80 AD 12.7g, 25mm Dattari 426, BMC 2741, RPC 2464
Thanks TIF. I've had this coin for a long time. My catalog doesn't even reflect where I got it or how much I paid. Oh the good ole days.......
My only Flavian from Alexandria is this Domitian obol (year 6 under chin on obverse) with Griffin. The type comes for many years but only a couple are at all common according to Emmett. In this period we have more selection of smaller denominations. I have had this coin for over 20 years and believe this is the first time it has come up in a discussion thread so I'll ask forgiveness for stretching the point showing a Domitian obol when the call was Titus Tet.
No Egyptian Flavians, just this one guy. Domitian AD 74 revalued XLII by Ostrogoths in the 6th cent AD.
that is a great "grumpy titus" TIF! i only have 1 flavian coin, and you're all probably sick of seeing it...so i'll refrain.
WWSD: Vespasian, AD 1 Jul 69-24 Jun 79 AR, Denarius, 3.09g, 18mm; 6h; Rome, Jan-Jun AD 70 Obv.: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; laureate head right Rev.: COS ITER TR POT; Pax seated left on chair without back, branch in right hand, caduceus in left My only Flavian.
IDKWWSD, but IKWIWD : congratulate you on a very nice coin and picture TIF. And the die shift adds to the impression of relief (kind of like drawn shadows behind cap letters) Very nice Q
Sweet, sweet OP-example, my coin-Princess (yummy-yummy!!) Oh, and WWSD => *whatev* ... Flavian this!! => congrats again on a super OP-example (you rock, my cheeky lil' friend)
