Hi All, I find that over the last few months I am becoming more interested in the coins of Imperatorial Rome. There are some great characters represented. I picked up a portrait of Marc Antony a few weeks ago and it has got me thinking about other figures from around the same time. Since completing the 12 Caesars set I have also been on the lookout for upgrades, though I have not been in a hurry with this at all. Last night I was having a look through the recent offerings at Vcoins and I stumbled upon this coin. It is a coin of Titus with a prow on the reverse. I have seen examples before including within David's fantastic Flavian collection in his Forvm gallery. Well, I did not think about it for long. I snapped it up as it is an interesting coin. My example is not as nice as David's but I could not resist. Please post your coins of Titus. Titus. AR Denarius 19 mm (3.3 g), as Caesar, AD 69-79. Rome, under Vespasian, AD 77/8. Obv: T CAESAR IMP VESPASIANVS, laureate head of Titus right. Rev: COS VI, prow of galley right, sides ornameted with intricate cross-hatch and maeander patterns; above, star with sixteen rays. RIC 950; BN 202; BMC 226; RSC 68. Ex: Incitatus Coins
Nice portrait on it and neat reverse. Surprised you didn't get one of him as augustus instead. Titus (79 - 81 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M•, laureate head right. R: TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P, facing empty throne of a deity (pulvinar) with a triangular back, back ornamented with uncertain objects and a cross at the peak, seat draped with a fringed cover. Rome Mint, 80 A.D. 3.34g 17.8mm RIC II, part 1, 124; RSC II 313a; BMCRE II 61; BnF III 50; SRCV I 2515
Beautiful toning on your example. Yes, I wanted one with Titus as Augustus. My other Titus is also with him as Caesar. However, the one I bought does not appear very often so i had to buy it when I saw it.
Great OP coin - I particularly like the ornamentation on the prow. Incitatus always seems to have very reasonable prices for a vcoins dealer. Nice score!
Outstanding new purchase Orfew. Great reverse. TITUS Billon Tetradrachm OBVERSE: AVTOK TITOY - laureate head right REVERSE: Bust of Serapis right, LB before Struck at Alexandria, Egypt, Year 2 = 79-80 AD 12.7g, 25mm Dattari 426, BMC 2741, RPC 2464
That's a really nice coin Orfew. A good example of the 'large head' portrait. The type itself is much rarer for Titus Caesar than the corresponding one for Vespasian. Awesome catch!
Great ship prow Orfew! Here is my only Titus: Titus. Denarius. Rome, 79 AD. Obv: IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG PM, Head laureate right. Rx: TR P VIIII IMP XIIII COS VII PP, male captive, bound, kneeling in front of trophy Sear ME 2493. RIC 17. BMCRE 30. This reverse commemorates Titus’s victory over Judea.
Outstanding posts!!! And I am still drooling over Orfew's OP coin----I LOVE that reverse!!! My Titus example is a bit more pedestrian....a provincial bronze depicting an affordable Judea Capta example:
Thanks JA. This is the second coin I have bought from him...but it will not be the last. Also, since he is in Canada (and so am I) I do not have to worry about duties and customs. He is also friendly and great to deal with.
