I got these two coins in a small lot and I have no books on greek coins, at least I think they are greek. They are silver or non bronze. The first coin is 11mm and the second is 16mm. Any attributing help? Thanks Charles
The first coin: Thracian Cherronesos, c 480-450 BC, AR Hemidrachm Obverse: Forepart of Lion right, facing back. Reverse: quadripartite incuse square Grade: Fine Can you get a bigger pic of the second..I think it may be a Celtic imitation, but not sure. stainless
Thanks stainless A lion on the obverse, heck I thought it was a clam! So little I know of greek coinage. Charles
There really is no way for me to tell for that second one. It looks like it has high relief on the obverse, which makes me think maybe an Alexander III drachm. It may even be a celtic Imatation, but I can see no detail at all, so I'll have to call it a slug. A few others should be around soon, maybe they can attribute it. stainless
the smaller one is Chersennosus (which I spelled dreadfully wrong.) The other is a Celtic-Thracian imitation of an Alexander III drachm. Matches the type I have, which I referenced as Kostial 947.
Thracian Cherronesos hemidrachms are really neat coins & prices on them seem to have been going up recently from what I've seen. Barry Murphy put together some great info on them here... http://bpmurphy.ancients.info/chersonese/Cherronesos.htm
