Dear friends, everything has to come to an end. I have spent almost ten years to assemble tho most complete roman portrait gallery possible in the Sestertius denomination, with (mostly) matching toning: So now it is time for me to move on and for my little treasures to find new homes (after all we are just custodians, aren't we?). So since I was asked in a couple of private messages: if you want to adopt one, you may take a look at the offerings of the german branch of a well known e-commerce platform before Sunday 8 pm CET, or to browse the inventory of the current online sale of a Swiss auction house before July 11. Thank you for all the interesting conversations and online friendships I made! Take care, JG
A fantastic achievement and a great collection of sestertii. Will you be starting in another direction?
That's a nice looking collection. I'd personally hate to get rid of it after spending the time/effort to put it together. Can you give a little insight into why you are selling?
That is really a beautiful set of trays. The "(mostly) matching toning" really makes it especially impressive. Reminds me very much of the Sestertius collection from the Subasta Extraordinaria at Cayon Substas in July 2016, with which I'm sure you're familiar (possibly that was Ernesto Gutiérrez Guinea's collection [?], since so many were published in his Valor de los Sestercios). I'm going through your listings now. Not everyone sees it this way, but as I've commented before, I find any coin much more attractive if it has been in an interesting collection (or several) in the past.
Yes, I acquired my Galba (on offer in my current eBay sale) and Claudius from that collection and they are both illustrated and discussed in Valor de los Sestercios My Macrinus (in current Leu auction), Nerva (in current eBay.de auction), Gordian II and Numerianus have century-old pedigrees and some other at least decade-old provenances
Update: A whole bunch is already gone via Ebay (including Livia, Vespasian, Titus, Faustina I and II, Lucilla, Julia Domna, Julia Paula, Aquilia Severa, Julia Soaemias, Orbiana, Balbinus, Hostilian, Trebonianus Gallus and Valerian) but 25 coins can still be found here (at least Agrippa, Agrippina Senior, Antonia, Nerva, and Geta will be sold within the next 24 hours): https://www.ebay.de/usr/do217 and 20 more (including my avatar Macrinus Sestertius) at Leu 26 (they are listed under my last name in the catalogue).
