Let's face it, he's not well talked about now, didn't do anything real special then(other than banish or put to death his kin or anyone else he feared or disliked). But he was the 1st inheritor of the empire. here's my denarius of the man. Post your coins and comments peeps
Desperate need for Octavian Augustus to appoint / adopt a successor after losing so much excellent talent that either died or killed... He was a pig that begat pigs in his line... I always liked the concept of their republic. Yeah, you had nasty Patrician Families, etc. But, they were only able to serve 1x and for 1 year as Consul and other offices. In the Imperatorial Period, they started breaking that rule and bad precedence began... RI Tiberius AE As 14-37 CE Laureate-Pont Max Globe Rudder RIC I 58
It's not my intention to defend Tiberius and his actions during his reign, but I will point out that he appears to have been a very reluctant Emperor, pushed by his mother Livia to succeed Augustus, and forced to divorce a wife (Vipsania) he truly loved in order to marry Augustus' daughter Julia. This would be enough to send most of us over the edge. His coins tended to be somewhat boring, although the above two coins are refreshingly different from Tiberius' more common types. Of the three Tiberius coins that I own, only one is somewhat interesting from coin perspective: TIBERIUS AE Dupondius (16.87 g.) Rome 16 - 22 A.D. RIC 38 TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVST IMP VIII Laureate head left. Rev. CLEMENTIAE S C Small facing bust, laureate, draped (Tiberius?) within laurel wreath on round shield w/circle of petals, outer circle of palmettos
Everytime somebody mentions Tiberius I kick myself for not getting to visit his holiday house on the island of Capri when I stayed there for a couple of days, so much to see at the other end of island. Any way pic below is a shot of the sheer cliff face that his holiday home sits above, as close as I could get on the way out. Story has it that he threw people out the window when he tired of them, nice drop eh.... I have a few coins of this bad boy, AR Denarius Lyon mint, 3.54gm, 18mm, RIC 30, a bit of centre but happy with detail. It portrays him with a fuller face than the usual must be an earlier one. And this AE As Rome 15-16 AD, 10.4gm, RIC 34.
I agree with all stated. I always wondered if he could have abdicated to someone else since he "did not like being Emperor".
i also have this coin ( dupondius?)that's supposed to be ol' Ti, but i wasn't for sure(is it?) so i didn't thread it with the other coin i'm quite sure of. excellent coins and post peeps
gregarious => congrats on adding that sweet OP-Tiberius (winner) I have two Tiberius examples ... they both make me smile Tiberius Clunia, Spain, AE As Tiberius Emerita, Spain, AE Dupondius
