As many of you know, I purchased a Tribute penny from a well know and respected Vcoins dealer about 6-8 weeks ago. There were just too many questions about that coin, so I just returned it to the dealer who assured me it was authentic. BUT he said one of his goals is to make the customer happy. He agreed to exchange that coin for another (with some added cost) or I could get a full refund. Needless to say, I accepted his offer to exchange the coins. The new coin arrived today, and I don't think there is any doubt about it's authenticity (but I could be wrong - like many times before). So without further ado, I present to you my newest version for your comments and critique. As always, post your Tiberius coins so mine won't be too lonely. TIBERIUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG AVGVSTVS, laureate head right REVERSE: PONTIF MAXIM, Livia, as Pax, holding long sceptre & olive branch, seated right on throne with ornate legs, single line below Lugdunum 14-37 AD 3.75g, 19mm RIC 30, RSC 16a, BMC 48
I went back and looked at Tiberius you sent back and think you made the right choice. This one is much nicer, congrats! Here's mine: TIBERIUS AR Denarius 3.74g, 18.6mm Lugdunum mint, AD 14-37 RIC 30 O: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS, laureate head right. R: PONTIF MAXIM, Livia (as Pax) seated right on chair, holding scepter and olive branch; ornate chair legs, footstool, single line below.
Strangely enough with so many Tiberius denarii all around, it's hard to find the right one. It seems you succeeded, nice one Hope you don't mind seeing mine again ROMAN EMPIRE, TIBERIUS Denarius, RIC 26 Lyon mint, after 15-16 AD TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGUSTUS, Laureate head of Tiberius right PONTIF MAXIM, Woman seated right on a throne (Livia ?) and holding sceptre 3.71 gr Ref : RIC # 26, RCV #1763, Cohen #16 Q
I agree this is better. There are many things to consider with these certainly including style. Of my TP's, the one I consider to have best style is a fourree and the hands down worst style I have is my favorite (the Indian copy). We all need to find the coins that 'speak' to us.
Well if we're going to post fouree Tribute Pennies, here's one you won't want to bring home to meet your mother...
Thanks to all for your kind comments. At least I can rest assured that this coin is ligit. No nagging feelings about it's authenticity.
You definitely made the right choice! My Tribute Penny is an aureus from the Boscoreale hoard (joining my two others written about here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/pompeii-and-roman-gold-new.243230/ ) The style is atrocious but the toning/pedigree are what made it a "must have" for me.
It's amazing.. And i was about to ask "How can gold tone?" when i found my answer in your link: "Gold itself is inert and does not tone but when made into coins, it is alloyed with small amounts of silver and copper which are susceptible to toning."
That's a sweet new addition, big bro ... of course, I had to search and discover why it was called a Tribute Penny (very cool) ... I'm glad to see that you're buying some new bobbles (cheers)
