The following question has been on my mind for some time now. We, of the Paper Money Forum, are genuinely thrilled with the beautifully engraved vignettes on our currencies (of all types).

So I would love to hear everyone's comments by completing the following:

I don't collect, inspect or study STOCK & BOND CERTIFICATES because ___________.

    Thanks!

I find stocks & bonds granted do have beautiful engraved vignettes on them ,but my problem after buying a few is some of the stock cert. & bonds are huge in both length & width and the redeemable coupons make them even larger.

The Prairie Spirit is a beautiful Vignette but the Bond is very large with coupons and cannot be easily displayed
This is the only reason I don't collect them for this reason after purchasing a few for the Vignettes

While I admire the vignetts on these documents, my major interest lies within the collecting of the actual US Note, wether it be FRN, FRBN, LT, SC or NBN's.

The Engravers of these vignetts are some of the most talented and while they deserve to be admired for the wonderful work, it's not the same as real US Currency.

    Great question.

Maybe I'm over-analyzing your question, but it is hard to answer as it stands. I agree, a beautifully engraved vignette is a wonderful thing, and as such I will "inspect or study" a stock certificate which has many characteristics similar to banknotes.

But the question of why we collect what we collect, as Art says, can be quite different from that. I don't collect Renoirs, even though there's wonderful engraving work on them. I just can't afford the hobby. I don't collect stocks and bonds, mostly because I have this desire to "finish one thing before you start another". I don't collect USA banknotes because I'm enjoying digging deeper into French notes, rather than wider across the world.
