Hi found some interesting nickels i could use some help with. Let me know what you think. These three nickels i am displaying are all 2012 with a (P) Mint Mark. When looking through some pocket change i found one nickel with what i thought was a die gouge in the first window on the reverse side of the Monticello building. As i continued to search i noticed one with an identical mark in the exact same spot. I then noticed they have the same date and mint mark. As i looked in further they had other identical characteristic. Which leads me to ask if this is one really weird coincidence or possibly something else. I'm new to coin errors and still learning so I know I most likely have nothing. Thanks to everyone for your help. Picture #1. The first Nickel is of a regular 2012 (P) Nickel followed by the two that i mentioned above with a mark in the first window. Picture #2. One of the Nickels with the mark has this on the (T) in Cents Picture #3. On the obverse both Nickels have the same mark in (E) in Liberty Picture #4. Both of them have a weird (FS) next to the Monticello Building Picture #5. This is another Nickel that i found. This one doesn't have the mark in the window but it has a (FS) as displayed in picture #4 also.
The FS is the initials of the designer of the reverse, Felix Schlag. They are on all Monticello reverses. The other coins look like die chips to me. Remember, the low part of the coin corresponds to the high part of a die. Pieces break off of the die quite frequently. The two with the die chip in the window seem to have come from the same die.
Thanks guys. I never seen so many die chips on one coin before then i found one exactly identical lol had to ask.
Not making this up...I just looked in pocket change and found that the only nickel I had was 2007... and found this.
A heck of a lot . now days the mint has to make so many coins they use the dies until they almost fall apart then sometimes repair them by grinding and polishing . get you some state quarter rolls and look how many coins that have many die chips. some of these are so extreme that the design starts to look different.
