A thought for a new thread like "Coins we've owned for less than two days and misplaced. "Or Worse". We can use my 1846 Coronet cent for an example. Just a thought. Sorry, I've got to go finish dismantling my house. I misplaced a penny...
The other day I though I lost one of my denarius of Diva Faustina, I went crazy ... Then I realized that I had put it in my photo binder. After which the panic stopped.
I'm not sure yet whether this is lost or not, but I think so. It's too big for me not to have found for the last 15 years or so. I had a full set of Liberty V nickels in a Capital Plastic holder. I have no idea where it is. It is/was a low grade set. The two early keys were only AG as I remember. But I think the 1912-S was Fine. Most of the other coins were Good. Poof! Gone! And no clue how/why.
Old Whitman folder of Washington quarters Vol. I. Been searching for it for years. Must have been lost in a move between houses.
My coins were stolen. All were recovered except a 1907 No Motto PCGS MS65 (CAC'd) aqnd a Flying Cent w/ small letters (1858) MS65 PCGS and CAC'd also... The others were all cracked out of their slabs and I'm awaiting the states attorney to let me have them back so I can get them regraded.... doubt the g$1 is going to regrade 66, looks like they manhandled it.
When I was a teenager I purchased an 1942/1 Mercury dime at a local coin shop. After that I went clothes shopping and tried on a couple pairs of jeans. Got what I wanted and then put my clothes back on and left only to later notice that the coin that was secure in it's case in my pocket was GONE! Never to be seen again.
My grandparents used to always give us their change they'd saved up, but we had to sort it and count it first (sounds like it was a good way to keep us busy - I never complained). I once found a 1934 Quarter in PRISTINE condition. I remember being amazed, as it was the most perfect coin in the whole jar of probably $60-70 face value. How it got there in that state, I'll never know, and what happened to it since, unfortunately, I'll never know either. While likely not a HUGE prize (probably worth a few hundred $$), I couldn't remember ever seeing such a perfect quarter in circulation. I keep "sentimental" coins separate from my other coins now to keep them safe, and remember where they came from.
At the Chicago International show this year I purchased a mint state 1795 farthing Conder token still in the auction flip from Allan Davissons first sale. Haven't seen it since.
