Hi CT folks Hope you enjoy your sunday. It's november and grey and foggy here where I stay, the perfect weather to shoot pictures of a bronze coin with natural and diffuse light. I've recently acquired from a dear friend of mine, a provincial bronze (AE 30) of Caracalla with a most interesting feature : a left facing heroic bust seen from behind with Aegis on shoulder : Caracalla, AE 30 Serdica, Thrace, AD 216 ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝΟC AVTK M AVP CEV, laureate heroic bust left, seen from behind, with sword belt and Aegis on left shoulder OVΛΠIAC CEPΔIKHC, Hermes, naked, standing left, holding purse and caduceus 17,14 gr - 30/28 mm Ref : Moushmov 4804 (obv), Varbanov 2372 (rev) See Agora auction #62/102, same dies It appears it might be quite rare, as the only other example I could spot is the Agora one mentioned above : Image courtesy of Agora Auctions #62/102 Do you guys and gals confirm it's struck from the same dies ? Can any of you find other examples, and/or other references ? And of course, post anything relevant : Caracalla, heroic bust, Aegis, bacon or whatever Cheers Q
Cool! This is the only Caracalla from Serdica I have. His cuirass is decorated on the shoulder, but it's probably not an aegis:
I agree; same dies, and excellent ones at that. In fact, the coin itself is just plain stunning! Nice acquisition, Q!

Thanks folks @Jwt708 I like all your pictures, but am particularily fond of the Pautalia's portrait My only Pautalia so far : Plautilla, Bronze - Pautalia, Thrace PHOYL TTLAVTILLA CEBA, diademed and draped bust right HTE CIKI KLAPOV OVATTI TTAUTALIAC, river god seated left 12,4 gr Ref : Ruzicka, Pautalia # 771a, G&M #134/1849, same obverse die Q
@Cucumbor that one is probably my favorite too. I have none featuring Plautilla but here's a large provincial of Caracalla's mother, Julia Domna: PISIDIA, Antioch. Julia Domna. Augusta, AD 193-217. Æ35, 25.8g, 6h. Obv.: IVLIA A-VGVSTA; Draped bust right. Rev.: COL CES ANTIOCH; Mên standing facing, head right, left foot on bucranium, leaning on low cippus, holding sceptre and Nike; to left, cock standing left; S R across fields.
