If you can afford it and like it, go ahead and pick it up. Some of the proofs (especially the silver) sell for significantly more than $5.00, though some of the clads go for significantly less than that. I know I have more than $350 in my set.

Not to sound repetitive, but of course always consider the caveats when dealing with a Craig's List advertiser.

You will need to see them in hand. They could be covered with hairlines. He probably paid a buck or two just for the holders.

As Larry said, you need to see them in-hand, and even then you need to ask yourself if you know enough about such coins to safely and comfortably buy. Perhaps it would be a good idea to do some searching online to see how much similar (assume average) sets are actually selling for, and don't put any weight into the seller's "over $1000 retail value" claim. The other gentleman was right in saying that some will be worth more than the average, and some worth less, so this is something you need to be very aware of and don't use a price guide for valuing, especially with the lower value/demand dates which can often be had from B&Ms and/or general dealers at significant discounts.

As always, it is one thing if you want the coin (or in this case coins) as a personal collectible, but a whole different ballgame if you're hoping for a flip. Craigslist used to be a decent venue for both buying and selling, but when metal values started rising a few years back, it didn't take long for it to turn into a haven for the dreamers, wannabes, and cons. With a set such as this, I would not worry too much about security, but be aware of the possibility this guy may be trying to snag a sucker; CL can be a great place to namelessly unload junk to someone who does not know any better and/or is hoping for a "deal".

The holders are the so-called "premium" version offered by CoinWorld, and IIRC, sell retail at just under $3 for a package of three.

The first thing you have to answer for yourself is "What do I want out of these coins?" Do you just want a collection of all the Kennedy halves? If it were me and that was my objective, I would rather have the fun of finding and examining each coin to add to the collection. The journey is what's important to me, not the destination.

Secondly, as previously mentioned, if you want to flip them, then you will want to view every single coin. To get a nice return, IMO, you'll need to send the best examples to either NGC or PCGS for grading. Then you'll be able to get a nice return. If you plan to sell them in the current holders, IMO, your results will be mixed at best.
