You have the clad issue, right?

It's really hard to assign a grade to an uncirculated coin, bases on a digital image, but if put to the test, I would guess PR-63. A commercial grade coin.

Now, as for it's worth, I have seen these, with cameo contrast, sell for $5.00. I would estimate that your's is worth at least $3-$4.
I have seen where people pay as much as $9.00 for coins simular to your's. It's all a matter of finding the right buyer, at the right time.

The silver issue would go for several dollars more.

    Wow only a 63?

I am not that good at the sutle differences that seperate coins once they go over 60, but I would think that this coin is higher.

What is holding it back from a higher grade, looks perfect to me.

Okay, I'm certainly a resident non-expert on U.S. coin grading, but pretending it's Japanese Meiji silver, the biggest problem I see is that the shield and tail feathers on the reverse are either an extremely light strike, or showing some wear (I can't be sure which from the picture, but light strike is more likely due to the rest of the appearance). IMHO that alone puts the upper limit at MS64, unless it is a light strike that is considered typical of the year and mint, in which case "market grading" might raise the limit to MS65.

Although it is difficult from a picture, the coin looks like PR65 to me. In my experience, proof coins don't ever look as good in pictures as in real life. It is extremely difficult to get an accurate image because of the mirrored surfaces. The frosting all looks even and I don't see any stray marks in the field which leads me to believe it's a PR65. I wouldn't grade anything higher than that from an image. :)

I think that if you look at the original post, you will see that the OP asked for opinions. That's what I gave him.

Like you, I'm not much good at the 11 point grading system for uncirculated coins, but if you'll notice I told the OP that my opinion was a "guess".

Like I said, all we have to go on is a digital image of a coin. We don't have the coin to examine.

The coin looks like it has smudges on the reverse, and maybe a small scratch, or two. I don't see much cameo contrast, either.

Now, you say it looks perfect. Well it may indeed be nearly perfect, but as we all know, grading coins is subjective, even when the coin is in hand.

If you'll notice we already have opinions that range from possibly impaired, to perfect. The only conclusion that I can come to from that, is that there is no right or wrong answer to the question.

    Jody,

I was not criticizing your grade, I do respect the information that you post here. Lord knows, you have a far better knowledge of coins then I do.

Like I said unless I have my photgrade book with me, I can only guess on a grade. With photograde only going to AU50 anything above that is guessing for me unless I have something else to compare the coin to.

I guess my comment was or should have been, "Why does it not grade Higher"? What are it's flaws?

    Thanks
